Went to Big Counter and it was one of those places that I’ve walked by so many times and had no idea what they did. It’s got a smallish menu that changes up quite often. 600g Steak, 60 They didn’t ask how we wanted it cooked, and I respect it tbh – it came out exactly as it should be: pink and tender. Perfect. The peppercorn sauce was rich but well balanced. There was a bit of marbling on the bottom end, which added some tough parts but nothing too bad. Overall, it was incredible. Salad, 9 This came absolutely buried under parmesan – you know that moment when a waiter keeps grating, and you forget to say “when”? Well it felt like that. Chips, 5 Crisp, well-seasoned and a decent sized portion, a great accompaniment to the steak and peppercorn sauce. Mussels in Cafe de Paris Butter, 12 Wow. Just wow. This was my first time trying mussels in this style, and it was absolutely life-changing. I’m used to seeing white wine or garlic butter, but the richness of the cafe de Paris butter added so much depth and flavour. A definite highlight of the meal. I’ll definitely be back when they switch up the menu again – this was a special night! Follow me on insta for more reviews: @Lewishere_lewisthere
Another insane meal from big counter. Consistently great stuff from here. Great vibes in the restaurant, great service. Menu varied and prices very good for portion sizes. Dying to come back.
Fantastic dinner with 5* food, drinks, service & atmosphere. We tried a bit of almost everything and each bite was a pleasure - inventive but satisfying, expert home cooking that was indulgent in the very best way. Would recommend to anyone and everyone. Wines were delicious and service was super friendly and attentive. Restaurant is really cosy, too, and the staff took every care to accommodate our requests. We all agreed it was a big success. Thanks so much for a lovely pre-birthday meal! We'll be back!X
Sometimes a place is so good you have to go back twice. Just to check the first time wasn't some sort of fluke. Big Counter is one such place. You may not have heard of it, there's no big showy signs, no opulent interiors and its not in a listed building in the heart of the city. And it's better than so many places with all three of those. The hospitality is genuine, the staff all seem delighted to see you, they chat lovingly and knowledgeably about the food and the wine. They want you to have a great dining experience, not because they hope you'll leave a good review or a good tip, but because they seem to genuinely care about their customers. The vibe is laid back, they recognise if you've been before, it feels like a supper club or visiting that one mate that can actually cook and so you and your pals hang out there a lot. The ingredients and the dishes are traditional, tongue, liver, mussels, the best steak Tartare I've had outside of Paris. But this isn't how you'd granny would make it, the dishes have more twists than a Guy Ritchie movie. They are consistently brilliant, with the quality of the ingredients shining through. Bread & butter has never been so exalted. The plate size is all about sharing, three people really should just order every dish on the menu, you'll be nice and full and won't have missed out on anything. The same approach to desserts is absolutely the way forwards. You're looking at around forty to fifty pounds a head if you do this, but with some really good wine available you'll probably spend more. This may well be my favourite restaurant of the last year. But I should probably go back one more time, just to make sure...
This has to be the best restaurant in Glasgow. Quite simply everything is delicious. The menu changes frequently and it’s always exciting to try something new. We’ve been to most restaurants in Glasgow and there are some great restaurants to cater for everyone, but invariably we always decide they weren’t as good as Big Counter. The setting is simple, it’s not opulent, but it is the best food you will get in Glasgow and now they have started doing cocktails. What more could you want.
Had such a brilliant meal here! The owner and staff were really conscientious of my dietary requirements (pregnancy) and had things on hand to swap out for me etc. the food was phenomenal, perfectly seasoned and cooked with some really interesting combinations. Only thing I'd warn is it's not great for veggies.
Top notch! Menu was really different from other places in Glasgow and the food and service was superb. Also had a very nice wine list with a few beers to compliment the food.
Came here last night for my Mum's birthday, we were in awe, and totally obsessed with the place from start to finish. All the flavours and textures were balanced so perfectly, and ALL the staff were LOVELYYY! I've never cried over food, but the pudding brought tears to my eyes, the colours and the flavours were so nostalgic and yet I'd never tasted anything as perfect as that before...! All in all my Mum had the best birthday thanks to Big Counter, and if you have the means then I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND eating here at least once in your life!
